FAQ ioSafe R4

How do I setup two ioSafe R4 units to mirror each other with the built-in backup manager using the rsync protocol?

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

Enable rsync access for the shares to be mirrored on both ioSafe R4 devices. Then, on each ioSafe R4, create a backup job using the remote share as the source, and the local share as the destination. Schedule these jobs so that they do not run at the same time.

How do I change the file and folder permissions on an ioSafe R4 that is attached to the domain controller?

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

You can use Windows ACLs to do this -- right-click on a file, select Properties, then the Security tab. From there, you can set the permissions as desired. Most Windows operating systems will have this feature. Some, such as Windows XP Home, do not. To get the Security option to show under properties, you may need to uncheck the "simple file sharing" option in the Folder Options/View menu.

Our domain user(s) can not login to the ioSafe R4. What should I do?

User Rating: / 1

  1. Make sure the ioSafe R4 has successfully joined the domain.
  2. Make sure the login credential is correct.
  3. Make sure the user is logged into the domain on the client PC.

How many domain users can the ioSafe R4 handle?

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

The ioSafe R4 can handle up to 30,000 user + computer accounts, and up to 30,000 group accounts. Please note however that the web-based FrontView management utility will behave slowly when there are more than two thousand domain users.

The ioSafe R4 failed to authenticate with the domain controller. What should I do?

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

In most cases, this comes down to a DNS problem. You'll need to make sure that the ioSafe R4 is configured to resolve DNS from a properly configured DNS server. The easiest way is to run the DNS service on the domain controller. For NT4-style domains, make sure you are joining using an account with proper credentials for joining the domain.

Backups using the built-in backup manager are failing with Windows 2003 Server sources. Why?

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

You must use the Windows (Archive Bit) protocol to back up from a Windows 2003 system. If you do not use the Windows (Timestamp) protocol, you will need to make sure that SMB signing is disabled on the Windows 2003 Server machine.

How do I backup an entire drive on a Windows PC to a share on the ioSafe R4?

Put a dollar sign ($) at the end of the share name. For example, if the D: drive is being shared on the Windows machine, the source path would be: //$machine/D$

How should I backup my ioSafe R4 to another ioSafe R4?

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

Use the rsync protocol in the backup manager to transfer the files from one ioSafe R4 to another. Rsync can also handle incremental backups efficiently. If several shares need to be backed up, create a separate backup job for each share.

I cannot use Umlaut characters in backup path.

User Rating: / 1
PoorBest

By default, the backup path name can contain only English ascii characters. In order to allow other characters in this feild, you need to enable "Allow Unicode for user, group and share names" option in FrontView's System/Language tab. This option is available only when Language is set to Unicode. Once this option is enabled, all Unicode characters can be used including Germanic Umulaut, Cyrillic characters, Chinese characters, etc.

User Rating: / 1

Use the Windows (Archive Bit) backup protocol which will handle foreign characters without a problem.

How do I resolve the FTP timeout issue during the backup? What is the current ftp time out setting on the ioSafe R4?

User Rating: / 1
